Home repossession, disaster or great opportunity
Home repossession, disaster or great opportunity.
There are few things more stressful and depressing than having your home taken from you. We assign so much value to our homes they become much more than bricks and wood. They attain a quasi-spiritual importance to which we attach a lot of what we are, our identity. I speak of the feelings of others which are so obvious by their actions and words. Personally I subscribe to The Chameleons philosophy that life is where the heart is. A house is a house and nothing more, but then again I have lost count of home many I have lived in. When a home becomes a symbol of your family, your youth, your roots, it is different. This has been proved over and over again by home owners that are willing to stay in their homes despite warnings from the authorities when a natural disaster hits.
Because a home is so significant, besides the real importance of providing warmth and shelter, we should protect it. We protect our home from repossession before we even buy it. Choose a home you are confident you can pay. Especially if it is going to be your home of residence it is not a good idea to over spend on your house. The reason for this is simple, if you can afford to pay the installments of your mortgage you should never have to suffer the pain of seeing your home repossessed.
In order to protect your home further you can take on mortgage insurance. This insurance can provide coverage in a variety of circumstances, if you lose your job, suffer a serious accident or get very ill. The mortgage will be paid for as long as your cover or illness lasts.
Another way of protecting yourself from repossession is to save. It is a good idea to have enough savings to pay for as many months as you can if you fall into difficulties.
You should also avoid everlasting mortgages that take a lifetime to be paid and you basically spend the first 20 years paying for interest.
If you follow these and other common sense guidelines you should never have to suffer a repossession of your home. However there is another side to repossessions. The side where you don’t lose a home but buy one, at bargain price.
With the raise in repossessions more and more savers are now taking their chance at buying cheap when everybody else wants to sell. How can you take advantage of this great opportunity and make it a success.
First, make sure everything is kosher. Disreputable sellers will take advantage of buying avalanches to put out there dodgy homes with ownership issues. Because of the great savings you are probably going to make it is worth getting a lawyer to check all the details of the payment of a home repossession. These procedures can get complicated and require an expert to make sure all T’s are crossed and I’s are dotted.
